Default Which carburetor is on the b230k engine?

Hi you clever bunch.
Please can anyone tell me which carburetor was fitted to the B230K engine. I am currently breaking an early 740 and am constantly being asked which carb is on the car. Not knowing much about the carburetor engines i am at you r mercy for the answer,

On my 1986 740 B230K was a Pierburg carb with autochoke. Volvo diagnosed the carb was knackered and I had fitted at an independant a new Webber carb with manual choke and it turned out the spluttering was caused by the fuel pump relay eventhough I asked the volvo dealer if it had one and they said no only a fuse!! Dont know if they fitted any other carbs on 740's

Regards. James

Hiya Minty. That's my carb! For a 1986MY it should be a Pierburg 2B5 with part number 1317036 (from memory!). The part number should be stamped on an aluminium tag if it hasn't been removed. There were some other carbs fitted to 700 series cars such as the Pierburg 2B7, which was fitted to B230Ks from 1987 onwards.

James, I also fitted a Weber carb a few years ago and it packed up within a year! The manual choke also destroyed the plastic trim near the steering wheel. So, I replaced all the main valves, diaphragms, and auto-choke on the Pierburg and then sent it off to Gower & Lee for a complete overhaul. It works fine now and looks almost as good as new. The total cost of rebuilding (parts I bought plus overhaul) would be about £300ish IIRC.

It looked very much like yours but can't be totally 100 percent sure as I only had the pierburg carb for about 7 months and then changed. Someone with more knowledge of carbs will be along soon. James

From memory was the tag fitted to one of the screws near where the fuel lines enter? I think mine was the 2B5 I got the conversion kit from euro car parts

In the end my car used to drive great for about 100 miles in one go and then it would rev by itself and the rev counter would start bouncing from 500rpm to 3000rpm wildly with severe spluttering and real sluggish. If you let it rest for 10 minutes you could carry on with your other 50 mile journey and no repeat. It used to do this on trips to the UK from Portsmouth to Birmingham and back. In the end though it did it more often even on short journeys. In the end we part exchanged it for a toyota which we sold recently and bought a 1989 240GLT estate. I put a lot of the problems down to the weber carb. I was forever cleaning the jets. I am glad my present car has got fuel injection. Glad that your carb is now good and running well. James

Haha! I used to carry a bicycle pump for blowing out the jets on the Weber whenever the car played up or broke down. I think the Weber carb was already contaminated when I bought it new. After putting up with it for a few months I stripped it down and cleaned out every orifice. I never had any problems with blocked jets after that but it still ran pretty rough driving around corners.
