I live in northern Italy most of the year. In most continental countries winter tyres or snow chains are mandatory in mountain areas and the police will ask to see them on a routine traffic stop - snow socks aren't acceptable, so I'd suggest the chains. Carrefour supermarkets sell them in France and Italy and have used them on my old Saab convertible but not yet on my XC60. Tricky ish to fit first time (10 min per wheel&hands filthy from reachin around back of wheel) but quicker after that. Great in ice and deep ish snow but limited to 30mph and need to stop regularly to check they're still tight. Seemingly the snow socks wear quite quickly especially when on icy roafs rather than snow but prob ok with occasional use in UK. Search eBay too-plenty of choice there as well.

Take a look at Spikespider sport chains . They are specifically designed for wheels with little wheel arch clearance. I had a set on my BMW M Sport and they were great. They are a great system and work on the principal that you fit a fixing plate to the outside of your wheel prior to your potentially hazardous trip, and if you get to a situation where chains are required the chains litterally click on to the pre fitted plates in seconds. They are excellent quality. Swiss made. The one down side is that they are very expensive. But once you have them you can adapt them to fit subsequent new cars you buy. May be worth a look.

You should be using single sided chains on an XC60 therefore no need to get round the back of the wheel - sounds like you are using 2 sides chains which will result in issues for you
