Apparently the name "Volvo" is derived from the Latin for "I roll."

Volvo was an offshoot of SKF - the Swedish bearing manufacturer - so makes perfect sense.

I learnt that back in the early 1970s when I was looking at a Volvo 144. The salesman was a Volvo enthusiast and he said he had spent time in Sweden. His understanding of the interpretation of the word 'Volvo' was 'I roll' or 'I have wheels'.

As 'ITSV40' pointed out earlier, Volvo grew out of the Swedish bearing manufacturer SKF, whose strapline was Jag rular, or I roll.

Volvo came late to car making in 1927. Until then, most cars were imports, mainly American, on account of their robust construction. The first Volvo, the Jakob, clearly displayed it's American influence. The company was formed by two gentlemen whose names I do not remember (and could not spell if I did) over a plate of crayfish.

Their early history bears an uncanny similarity to our own Rolls-Royce over a quarter of a century earlier. Sweden's other car maker, Saab, came even later to the fray in 1947, evolving from an aircraft manufacturer facing a much reduced demand for aeroplanes.
