C70 2004 auto transmission oil- No dipstick?
I'd much appreciate some help here. I want to change the auto transmission oil on my C70 2004 5 speed auto. From reading the various posts on the forum and You tube, I understand that there should be a dipstick in the gearbox. I don't appear to have one!
I looked everywhere with a torch, and even in the tight spots with an aperture camera, but no dipstick. However, I do have what appears to be a 'filler aperture' on top of the casing. Could this be the case? The model is 55-50SN - Serial number 04CV717737 - Another number on the label reads 8636 766. Hopefully I can attach a couple of photos. Thanks in advance. |

Hi
What engine size is yours? My ATF gearbox dipstick is yellow and is more towards the front, not near the ABS pump. It is hidden under the main air intake tube from above the radiator, going into the airbox. HTH Steve

Hi Steve,
Its the 2 litre version. I've searched high & low and still can't find it. Is that a screwed 'filler cap' on top of the gearbox? or something else? I've just whizzed down to have another look & still can't spot it. Do I have to remove the air intake tube to get to it then? Last edited by Rapido; Apr 9th, 2021 at 17:12. |

Thanks John & Steve for your responses. I'll take the air intake tube off next week and find it.

You might be able to put fluid in through there, but you can't check the level...too much is as bad as too little ...

Your quite right and I realise that. I'd measure the amount that I drain out and replace the exact amount with fresh oil. It would be so much easier if I could put the fresh oil in through the pictured screw cap ..... rather than the laborious procedure of using the dipstick aperture - when I find it!

Hi all
It rings a faint bell that the gearbox in the 2 litres is different. Removing the air intake tube isn't hard. While you have it off look around for a gearbox identification plate. Possibly towards the engine side, towards the top and front of the gearbox. I think it will have a model and a serial number on it. If there is any mystery that might help. This old post is relevant. https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=295906 Very important to use the right ATF. There are numerous posts about ways of changing the ATF (drain/flush/fill etc) Steve
