Default Looking to purchase t5 c70 - LPT/HPT

Hello,

Firstly apologies if this is posted in the wrong section, this is my first post on the forum.

I am looking to purchase a mk1 t5 c70, coupe or vert, auto or manual, preferably with MOT. Weeks of trawling through all the classified sites multiple times a day has yielded very few results. There are a few scattered around the country however I am in north Essex and most ads with potential are 3+ hours away. Hoping some enthusiasts on here may be looking so sell. Any advice appreciated, I have been through so many sub threads on the site and I have learnt a lot just from reading through them.

On a side note I am also looking for a classic v70(seem to come up even less) as a daily driver, however prioritising a t5 for now as summer is on the way!

Cheers

Phil

Edit: Sorry I should have added, any condition or price considered. Also Willing to travel for the right car

Cheers again

Welcome to the forum and yes you are in the right place😀

I think you will need to travel to find the right one - depends on how fussy you are regarding spec and condition. The coupes and convertibles are a completely different driving experience; a T5 coupe will be an engaging drive where the convertible is a lazy cruiser due to the flexible body shell. They do shift when needed tho'.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes from what I’ve been reading the convertibles aren’t as ‘agile’ as the coupes, the ideal would a be a 2.4 convertible and/or a 2.3 coupe but I think that’s slightly optimistic

Are the convertibles really that bad in the corners? Coming from a 330d cabrio and a clk cabrio before that so I’m no stranger to scuttle shake, however from what I’m reading it seems that a strut brace is almost essential on these cars for any spirited B road driving.

Cheers

Phil

Hey Phil, welcome to the forum! I'm looking at another v70 tomorrow, and if I buy it, my 1997 v70 would be for sale, I'm in Birmingham if that's not too far for you. If you want send me a text at 07534609369 and we can talk. I'm not in a rush to sell it as it's still insured, taxed and mot'd for a while yet but would be nice for it to go to a forum member!

Thanks for the reply!

Appreciate the offer, Birmingham is not too far if the car is mot’d as transporting one that’s off the road would be the issue. I’ll drop you a message later on today

Cheers

I find my convertible a very pleasurable drive and just what I was expecting - I didn't buy it to rag around the twisties though. Yes, there is some scuttle shake and fitting a strut brace has now resolved that to the point that any remaining shake is considered 'character'. I have only ever driven two other convertibles: my son's XR3i and a R-R Corniche Drophead. Considering both cars are at opposite ends of the quality scale, both are floppy and much more so than the C70.

Don't be put off trying out a T5 cabriolet, I had a 2.4 and a T5 at the same time - guess which I eventually got rid of! The T5 has loads more power and still keeps pulling long after the LPT 2.4 has run out of boost. I also found that the T5 was slightly better on fuel economy and it was cheaper on insurance.

A T5 coupe would be the ideal find but if you find a good T5 cabriolet and want to keep it, I'd recommend swapping the shocks for Koni active ones. The only other thing I would suggest is that if you are buying an auto, the T5 brakes aren't up to the performance.
