I have a message Anti skid temporary off
And ABS amber light

My S40 did that when it skidded sideways into a kerb and the NSF wheel ripped off...

Maybe check ABS sensor or cable running to it?

I'm sure I read somewhere the ABS rings can get dirty and that can cause faults with the front wheels

the rear ones are straight into the hub with some sort of magnetic pickup i think

good video here by Sirobb/Cheshired5 shows where they are and what they look like. you can probably check / clean them without taking it apart but it's nice just to see it all disassembled so you know what you're dealing with

Also check that your driveshaft bolts are nice and tight. If loose the driveshaft spline can move in and out, throwing an ABC error. Other than that, check sensors, wiring and reluctor rings.

My understanding of the "Temporary Off" message is it is more likely to be caused by an electrical issue. Possibly a low battery charge or a high resistance connection in the ABS module (easy and cheap to replace) - that was the cause on my previous 2004 V70.

I assume the message disappears after you drive for 10 mins or so?

A reluctor or sensor issue would cause and ABS/DSTC Service Required message, and it would be permanent.


But, at the end of the day we can all punt our favourite guess. You need to get the codes read for some real pointers to the real problem.

If you do a search - always a good thing to do first - you'll see that anti-skid is one of the most common topics on this part of forum.

The only way to proceed is: get the codes read.

The steering angle sensor is a common faulty component that gets progressively worse.

Hi guys
On the way to the local garage
I was braking up to a junction it was as if the abs kicked in
Car went to a lump mode for a few seconds
Then abs and antiskid service required amber and light on
Also brake assist service required
Car is booked in next week
Anyone had a similar problem or messages

I'm guessing there's a list of possibilities depending what the actual fault is, no one can really say without the fault codes.

for the future it would be better to own a copy of VIDA and you could plug in and tell everyone what the faults are to get an accurate reply of what to do

until then you can only really wait for someone to read codes and tell you. if you can find out the fault codes and get a price first you could post that here and someone can confirm they're not mugging you off
