The solution was Volvo recalled their cars & recalibrated the dipsticks/oil levels, so you add less oil, but the car still thinks its full if that makes sense. You only fill to the 3/4 mark on the dipstick & that has been the case for many years.

If there's only 4.8 litres in the engine, that's well below where it should be (it should be 5.7 litres) & that's why its barely showing on the dipstick - Its simply too low. Add oil until it shows at around the 3/4 mark on the dipstick (which if you drained the oil into a bucket would be approx 5.7 litres). If there's 4.8 litres in the engine now, you need to add another 900ml of oil to bring you to the 3/4 mark. Don't add anymore oil than that.
thanks Kev. Yeah I am pretty sure I did 5.7 last year. I have just done 5.7L and no warnings, also ran well with no noises raised temps and mpg was better than usual (new oil). I just got obsessed with this 75% thing and panicked with the engine model discrepancy. The dip is still a struggle ..... It 'might' be on the second x from bottom but will recheck cold tomorrow and check against Vida.

Put your chassis number into VIDA and it will tell you what engine you have
Would you be able to check your engine decal sticker and let me know it specifies D5244T4

Remember, the engine oil has to be 60 degrees minimum to get a percentage level in VIDA (the recommended oil level in VIDA is 70%).

If you check it & it says its 68% full, then that's near enough, as 2% isn't going to make much of a difference. If its says its over 70%, then leave it alone & don't add any more oil.

Yeah It will not even read the oil level if under 60 or above a certain rpm

Checked and the dipstick is roughly on second mark from bottom and Vida is showing 60% @ 95 degrees C.

You could add a drop of extra oil to get it as close to 70% (recommended level) as you can. 10% off is a bit more than I'd have personally if it was my car, but all the same, its only a small bit of oil that you need to add.

Start the car, get it up to temperature & check the oil level in VIDA again. Add a small bit of oil until it gets as close to 70% (you'll need to click the icon to refresh the reading). Just be careful not to add too much!

I imagine you'd need to add around 100ml approx to get it bang on where it should be (70%).

I do not see an engine decal sticker under the bonnet.

I have an oil decal telling me to use 0W-30, an aircon decal telling me to use R134a, and a Heico decal telling me the serial number of my Heico tune.
