...I replaced the standard aerial with a roof mounted amplified one from DAB onwheels...

Works a treat, even here in mid Wales where the signal is not too good.

Not really. It can be done but you need a bit of specialist kit for that. A car audio place would probably be able to do it (or even an aerial fitter).

Radio worked fine today, no problems, sounded good. A very random fault.

John, when your aerial amplifier was failing did it result in poor reception at times? My issue is binary - either nothing or a crystal-clear sound, always with a clear signal when tuned.

With mine, symptoms were - switch on and with the volume up, loads of static. With the volume really cranked up, again loads of static (just louder but just about discernible in the background was radio 2 (nothing on any of the other channels). Radio 2 is the strongest reception around here. Then, quite randomly I would get a decent signal on all channels.
I went for the aerial amplifier simply because I couldn't think of any other causes. The CD multichanger and tape were absolutely fine - sounding beautiful in fact - so it was obvious there were no problems in the pre-amp / power-amp circuitry.
That left just a possible problem on either the tuner/radio circuitry or aerial. I reasoned that as the damned thing worked sometimes that the aerial wires in the window must be fine and that the radio circuitry was probably ok but the aerial amplifier might be breaking down. Searching through multiple forums it seemed it's not uncommon for these to breakdown over time.

Regards
John

OK, thanks John. My symptoms are slightly different in that I don’t get any static. I know that my CD player doesn’t work, haven’t tried the tape deck.
