Default Swapping a D5 Euro 4 for a Euro 5

I need a new engine in my XC90. The cause is talked to death elsewhere.

Does anyone know about or have any constructive thoughts about, fitting a later version D5 (Euro 5)?

I am told they are more economical, so just wondered what might be involved or whether it's even possible without too extensive modifications?

That’s an extremly interesting question. The Euro 5 rules mandated a DPF filter which you don’t require and can be costly. Now of course your car is a euro 4 model year so won’t be tested to Euro 5. But the engine will probably look at a Euro 5 DPF requirement.

If it were upto me I would fit the normal Euro 4. The Euro 5 will only give 15BHp more and do 5mpg more so not worth the potential headache.

Much of the driver leading to this consideration is locating a 'decent' replacement. I just cannot find an appropriate replacement E4.

My hope is that opening it up may open up the potential donor register. Due to so many less miles being travelled, fewer accidents are happening which means fewer donors.

Evolve are just down the road from me, found them helpful in the past.

Would you even get a E5 engine running with E4 management?

Would the gearbox mate up?

I would go like-for-like or consider changing the car.

The issue I was thinking is are you not better to just buy a Euro4 car and swap the engine. You could then brake the old Euro 4 and make more money on it.

Also... Euro 4 XC90s are not worth a great deal are they? Is it not worth parting yours out then buying a new one?
