Question Oversensitive tilt sensor?

My drivers handbook adds the "vehicle must be on level ground" or words to that effect - is there a tilt sensor somewhere in the roof system - ie it could be due to an oversensitive alarm vibration sensor... my phone on vibrate is enough to trigger the alarm after central locking the cars with the fobs() if I leave it in either the 2005 C70 or the 2004 V70

The only tilt sensor is for the ROPS system. The reason the car needs to be on level ground is so there is no twist in the body shell or roof frame. If there was the roof would foul on itself and jam.

An old trick when viewing a car for purchase is to come back from the road test and park with one wheel up on the kerb. Operate the roof and it will.jam -then negotiate a hefty reduction in price as the roof has just failed.

Hi everyone - many thanks for the thoughts and opinions.

I will have a good play around with it, I.e re-check the boot, hand brake etc.

It is just really odd and after owning many cabrios, this has a me a little stumped. I shall report back any updates!

The mk1 doesn't normally need the engine running to operate the roof - engine speed is irrelevant. The only reason it is recommended is to prevent a flat battery. The owners manual posted earlier is irrelevant as it is for a Mk2. The only things the two cars share is the Volvo name and model.

With the engine running, the roof module must be getting a false signal from either the parking brake, the boot or ( not sure on this as I have an auto) from the gearbox. I'd get the car diagnostics done first to see if any of the voltages are showing a bad signal.

A volvo mechanic once told my that it doesn't need much to "upset" the roof.

Just a thought - have you tried getting the roof going with the engine off, then starting the car with the roof still 'in transit'?

Or does that sound like a recipe for the roof getting its knickers in a twist?

If you can lay your hands on or download a wiring diagram for the C70 convertible, take a look at what inputs go to the roof control module. That will at least give you some idea of potential input errors.

Quick questions:

Does the roof work ok with the ignition switch in position 1?

Does the roof work ok with the ignition switch in position 2 but with the engine off?

Regards
John
