New Lemforder drop links (thicker than standard) fitted three days before the MOT and torqued to recommended settings. All a bit puzzling... I think I will replace the trailing arm bushes and then see what happens at the next MOT. I was also thinking about fitting a thicker rear anti roll bar...

I fitted poly bushes to the top wishbones on my previous estate - an Alfa Romeo 159 - because the standard rubber bushes needed replacing every other year. It fixed the problem, however it did squeak annoyingly. I have since found out how to stop that using ptfe plumbing tape...

I fitted poly bushes to the engine mounts on my previous Peugeot 406 V6 Coupe and the added vibration in the cabin forced me to remove some of them. They contributed to a faster take up of power from the engine but to be honest, such improvements were only of any use on a track. The difference on the road was just noisy and uncomfortable.

The 406 Coupe community is going through a bushing crisis currently as OEM mountings become non available and consequently is facing the need for after market units where poly bushes are more easily produced in the small numbers required and this has brought the problem of poly bushing into focus. My advice on Volvos is not to do it unless you either have to or you have some really pressing need to do so. You only find out the difference between a good poly bush and a bad one after you've fitted them and even the good ones have their downsides!

Well, its each to their own I suppose.

I prefer the original ride comfort personally. Not that I'm saying polybushes are uncomfortable, but all the same, they aren't the same as what was fitted to the car originally.

I'd agree with that absolutely - only use them where they won't detrimentally affect the ride quality. or increase vibration transmission. I replaced the front anti roll bar bushes on my 2004 Mini Cooper S with Powerflex poly bushes and felt no difference at all - but then that's a car that rides like a board on standard bushes... :-))
I noticed recently that the IPD rear sway bar (anti-roll bar for UK) uses poly bushes in its fixings and IPD make good, well respected products.

Back in the 1970's a friend fitted a full Truimph 2000 clutch kit to his 240.
Exactly the same Borg/Beck replacement but half the price.
I'd be surprised if the trailing arm bushes were unique to Volvo.

Same on some/most/all same age Mondeos/Galaxies/et al. There are so many crossover parts between those cars - same platform, of course. I replaced a lot of my V70's suspension rubbers with Ford ones as they were MUCH cheaper - and then discovered a number were stamped "Volvo" on the actual part... and some of the old ones I removed were stamped "Ford)...!!

They are not . They are Ford Mondeo bushes . I havent heard of any problems with the Mondeo but the V70 is heavier and Ford , Who owned Volvo when the P3 V70 was designed just got it wrong trying to save a few bob.

There are various after market bushes available for the V70 . I fitted the genuine Volvo replacements when I had my V70 . They came with some plastic covers filled with a sealant to be fitted after the bush is inserted into the arm . Its supposed to stop any water and rust accelerating the de-lamination of the rubber from the out steel part of the bush . Mine were still good four years later.
This is a well known documented failing on the V70 . Could it be put into the "STICKY" section ?

Just dragging this back from the dead, i have just developed a squeak on the drivers rear, but it only seems to do it when it is bone dry and not been raining.

So, do i assume this trailing arm bush needs replacing? Or both maybe?
