Yes, I certainly think Volvo will always have an edge in safetly as it's their bread and butter. In the same way BMW will always edge Volvo in terms of handling and performance.
Have a look below at BMW doing rollover tests of their 2006 X6 SUV, compared to the original XC90 being rollover tested. BMW X6 rollover 2006:

The claim is only believable if the stats exclude those bored to death.
