Default Mother of all Leaks

Hey guys,

Done some research but can't find anything conclusive. 2004 XC90 been parked for 4-5 days a week over winter, intermittent usage at best, seemed to stay dry OK.

Went to drive it yesterday, got to a junction and as I put the brake on water flooded into the drivers footwell Loads of sloshing about when you brake hard.

Going to whip off the scuttle panel this weekend and have a good check of the drains etc. I heard there was an adapted cover for the CEM? Is this something you can buy separately does anyone know?

Thanks for help in advance

Sorry don't know about the CEM cover.
You will need to lift the carpet. There is a lot of foam underneath and it holds the water like a sponge.

Parennial question here... Do you have a sun roof.

If you have there is a common problem.in that the sunroof drains can become blocked, perished and disconnect in an area just inside of the wing mirrors.

So, do you have a sunroof?

I do and when I purchased my my '03, my passenger well was very soggy. I removed the tweeter speaker (should have taken more care as I broke the lugs), removed the hand grip and 'a' column cover. Behind this the sunroof neoprene drain pipe which
pushes into a rubber bend that passes from the inside to the outside of the car. In my case this was detached and had shrunk so it no longer reached the rubber part. I inserted a short length of 8mm copper pipe to extend the original and have had no problems since, other than I fitted a second hand tweeter cover.

See pic three years after the above 'mod'.

If no sunroof, please ignore this.

Well pointed above, was the car parked on an incline ? You may want to open the sunroof and use a hose to see if the front drains are clear. You also have rear drains but only important if the car was on an incline with the nose up. s for the CEM, first years had indeed an upgraded CEM housing, try calling Volvo with your VIN https://youtu.be/4jMAWVN2N0Q

Oh god, I do have a sunroof, and it was “nose up” for a little while when I noticed this issue. Where exactly are the drain pipes on the sunroof ?

Hi, look at the video kindly posted by orangex. This indicates where the drains are

To see where the forward ones go, read my last post. It is pretty quick and easy but be careful as you prise off the tweeter covers on the forward edge of your front window.

Check the side where you have the leak, probably 15mins work.

Hope this helps and let us know how you get on.

Btw, I would also check the amplifier under the driver's seat. Chances are that you have doused it in water!

I would remove it, inspect and dry it out. You may have got away with it.

Good luck!

Ps apologies for name error to oragex on last post (orangex)

Hi, just went to car wash and this time my driver's foot well had water all over it. Luckily I have rubber mats which seemed to trap the water.

On removing the panel to right of screen (and my mistake earlier, you do not have to remove tweeter speaker as that is in the door!) Pulled the plugs out of the handle and with a 10mm socket undid the bolts top and bottom and removed the panel.

As in the nearside, the neoprene pipe no longer reached the rubber fitting that passes through the shell. Unfortunately I had no 6mm pipe so this time I cut the existing neoprene about 12cm short and inserted a short length of 8mm neoprene tube. I know this may cause a restriction in future but hey, it has lated 18 years! Easy to check.

See pic where you can see how much the pipe had shrunk.

Hope this helps someone (My2003).
