Default Massive oil leak

Hey guys I have my 2014 V60 D4 R-Design almost two years. Last March car was for a service with my mechanic he told me it was leaking behind the camshaft on the timing belt side. So he replace camshaft & crankshaft seals along with a new timing belt. I’ve noticed it was leaking oil still, but nothing major. Last June it went into Volvo for the software recall & they replaced the EMAP pipe, injector pipe, along with a new EGR cooler pipes, gaskets etc. Car was grand. Again still noticed a bit of an oil leak. 3 weeks ago when doing work on it. I noticed oil visible on top of the gearbox, along with down the timing belt side. Looks like it’s the rocker cover gasket is gone. Was in with my mechanic today for a major service & he said it was an oil bath underneath the car & something is loose that’s gushing out oil. Is there anything Volvo would’ve touched in order to replace the EMAP pipes & to remove the EGR system from the car that’s maybe loose. But it’s everywhere.

I appreciate any help.

Same here regarding the Oil and location. Check for positive crankcase pressure (take oil filler cap off and check for air blowing out). Sounds like they may have fixed the leak and not the problem. My understanding is the 2014 D4 has a poorly designed middle piston ring which is supposed to allow the oil to drain away, but it gets clogged (possibly if anyone has ever added the 0W-30 oil instead of the 20 version). If it gets clogged, it means small amounts of oil get into the combustion chamber and that causes the extra pressure.

I've learned to live with just topping up .5L every 1000-1500 miles or so.

I also had the EMAP/EGR 'fix', I don't think they are linked to the oil leak issue, although that excess oil getting into the turbo/cooling system can't help with the EGR getting clogged.

I understand that the rocker cover gasket is prone to leakage on the VEA Diesel engine, but whether or not this will cause a loss of 0.5 litre every 1,000 or 1,500 miles isn’t clear to me.

The piston ring problem is, I believe, more related to the third ring, i.e. the oil control ring.

As JamboT knows, I’m currently trying to establish the root cause of the oil control ring drain holes becoming blocked (via a thread under “Diesel Engines”), but the issue is possibly too widespread to be explained just by occasional example of the use of the wrong grade oil. My car has now started to use a lot more oil after 130k uneventful miles, but it has only be serviced by Volvo dealers and a leading Volvo specialist.

@Nowayout. Have you needed to top up the oil? If so, are you able to say how often and how much oil was required?

Oil getting into the combustion chamber will not increase crankcase pressure

Yes, it's two unconnected problems.

The early VEA oil control ring drain hole problem is well documented in another forum thread... https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showp...3&postcount=25 However I've not seen a definitive explanation for the cam cover gasket leakage (and the possibly related problem of leakage from the cam end seals)... is it excessive crankcase pressurisation caused by a defective PCV, the cover warping or is it something else?

If the pcv isn't caught in time, oil will find it's way out of all seals not just the cam cover. Maybe see if there are other areas of leakage. I think .5 Lt of oil every 1000miles would be a fairly substantial leak, so if there are no obvious areas of oil leaking it's more than likely burning oil?
