Have XC70, had the cambelt and water pump changed at 10 years 77000miles. 10 miles later there was a rattling and a poof of blue smoke. Returned to garage to be told the turbo had gone. Nothing they had done had caused the problem?. Been using garage for 20 years. Brought reconditioned turbo, they replaced turbo but said not running properly, a miss fire, all injectors changed, no difference. Finally the sump was removed to fine shell damage, new shells fitted. Car ran stationly okay, was taken for test drive and sieged. Engine now sent away for crank regrind , and what ever else they find wrong. The engine was running okay when i first returned the car. Is this just my bad luck, or has something been done wrong?

I wouldn't use a garage that spends your money so badly.

I would have expected them to know the difference between a faulty turbo, faulty injectors and damaged bearing shells.

I'm not certain that they know what they're doing regarding mechanical issues, but I suspect that they know what they're doing in terms of spending lots of your money.

Goodness, how much was all that?

The issue is servicing and replacement is relatively straight forward. Servicing, changing disk and pads and cam belts I do in the drive. I am not a mechanic but have self learnt how to be a ‘fitter’.

Once complex issues arise it takes real skill to firstly diagnose using computers and then to question, review, isolate and attempt to replicate faults. It is of course far far easier to simply replace everything on the car, especially if a customer pays for it.

It’s clear they failed to correctly diagnose the first, second and third time. A blown turbo is very different to damaged injectors and the symptoms are different.

I am very very suprised to hear you are still using the garage.

I think for me that would be small claims court. Something I have never done before. Sorry to hear all this.
