Default ABS issues / symptoms...?

I've read many of the threads about ABS issues, and I thought I'd canvass peoples' opinions on this one...

My ABS has started increasingly kicking in, tends to normally be when the car / engine bay / ambient temperature is low, if everything is quiet inside the car, you can normally hear a kind of springy noise then some ticking, when it's about to happen.

It's not a permanent thing, some journeys it never happens other it happens repeatedly.

I've never had any issues with the brake warning light, or ABS light (they both light up when the ignition is first turned on, then go off correctly). When it happens, neither light comes on. Car doesn't have TRACS.

Also, it always seems to affect the braking of the nearside / passenger side front wheel, as the car can have a noticable turn to the right, if braking firmly.

With those symptoms, does it sound like it's more likely to be the nearside front ABS sensor, or the ABS ECU?

When was the last time the pad and caliper condition was checked...

These are heavy cars and often trip the abs over damp surfaces and Manhole covers...

Potholes can have the same effect too and there are certainly more of them than there used to be!
