Default S60 D5 2005 Fuel filter question

Hi folks,

My first post here and since I'm here it's been very helpful.

I'll be doing regular service myself for the first time (first car). I went to Euro Car Parts and going through fuel filters recommended by the car reg I entered I see there are two types. Enclosed and just the paper filter on its own. A friend suggested to get the enclosed one and swap the original for that one. Is that possible or should I go for just the paper insert (assuming this is the correct one to replace original, is that correct?).

Thank you in advance

Lucas

Lucas - look under the car on the drivers side in front of the rear wheel. If your filter housing is black plastic then you need the paper element filter. Don't try and change is to the other type.

Don't forget to unscrew the drain plug at the bottom of the housing before you remove it - makes the job much less messy.

Also, once it's back together turn the key to position 1 for 5 seconds without starting the car, do this 5 or 6 times. This will prime the diesel system without running the diesel pump dry. It should then start straight up.

Thank you for your replies. It makes much more sense now.

Just one more. Do I need this special strap-key to get it off?

This is the best type and you can get either a Volvo one or an aftermarket one made by Laser etc . They all look identical.

I have also managed with one of these prior to buying the proper one above but obviously it's not as efficient as the first one.

You will almost certainly feel that it is incredibly tight and worry about something breaking when trying to undo it, this is pretty normal but don't be rough with it . It's only plastic remember.

I always get a Mann filter from ECP and with a discount code it is currently £16 .

In addition, I always smear the new rubber O rings with Diesel and also put diesel on the canister threads to aid everything screwing together again smoothly.

If you need a paper filter I have a spare as the dealer sent the wrong part for my car, I needed the metal filter.

I'm sorry if I ask stupid questions but I'm very new to owning a car and I really like it and I don't want to do it any wrong.
