UPdate, broken sensor out
So, got a new sensor int eh mail today, went straight ahead and whipped old one out, it didn't come out cleanly - and you will see why in a min, took me longer to cut a cable tie down the back of engine bay and retrieve the sensor as i dropped it. any how tested new sensor, showing v similar values as working sensor in car so happy it works, went to fit it and it won't seat all the way in to allow it to be screwed in, need to find some needle type tweezers i think to fish out the broken piece if not, may have to get DPF off and flipped upside down to shoogle it out. why is nothing easy.
see pic of non working and replacement, about 10-15mm missing off old one any bright ideas welcome Last edited by Bigchewie; Sep 9th, 2016 at 13:39. |

So had another look, and had a wee fish with some tweezers nothing apparently there, so i slowly and with little to no force threaded the sensor in, after a few threads pulled it to check for damage, all good so refitted and tested problem solved

So a follow up for anyone who happens to be a bit daft like I was, since I had my mishap, on startup the first startup the car would run for 10 or so secs fine, then splutter, then cutout unless a quick blip/rev, this was getting worse as the mornings are getting colder. As I had the glowplugs done pre summer as I had two failed, I felt it was similar but not as bad, I kinda thought it was only one failed but no, after checking/testing them there were 4 failed. wonderful, all sorted now though.
Just thought I would share so if anyone makes the same mistake I did with fuel they can see what potential issues they may face |

So the petrol episode burnt out all 4 glow plugs too? that's interesting and well worth updating the thread for future.

Yes as far as I know the petrol episode burnt out 4 of the 5 glow plugs. And yeah thought it was worth sharing for when someone does a forum search for petrol in a diesel. My old man who worked on ship diesel engine said it was put to him once 'a diesel engine is a series of controlled explosions that are sometimes uncontrolled.' which I think is apt in this case |
