Adaptive cruise control is just too cool for cats
Just done a long motorway session using adaptive cruise control and it is just brilliant!

What's the difference between the "adaptive" cruise control and the conventional one?

It speeds you up and down using radar. Available on XC60s. I was able to travel for ages on the motorway, speeding up and down, moving between lanes, overtaking and at no point did I touch the accelerator pedal

I had an XC60 for the weekend as a test drive. It had all the driver support options including adaptive cruise control. I didn't like it and didn't order the driver support pack subsequently. It just felt weird only steering and doing nothing else. Guess you would get used to it just like regular cruise.

Sounds great, only concern I have about such a system is how it reacts to the motorway central reservation supermarket carrier bag or plastic sheeting that gets blown into your path by the car in front ?

It worked ok in all lanes and going round corners. It would be a pretty dangerous and fundamental flaw if it picked up the central reservation. Don't know about other objects getting blown in your path. I doubt it would detect a carrier bag but maybe it would sheeting. I think it looks for objects of car size didn't have the opportunity to try travelling behind a motorbike, hopefully that would work.

I didn't mean the central reservation, I meant the supermarket carrier bags which seem to live in the CR.

saying that i'd think it would make you less careful driver, but then before having a car with cruise control i always thought it was pointless, and I love it! out of interest, does it work at low speeds, say 20mph? i know on mine you can only turn it on above 20, played with it constantly when the car was new! but didn't seem safe, adaptive cruise control in low speed areas sounds like a good idea to me, if someone runs out infront of the car will it stop for you? |

I have to say I was worried about it taking away driver concentration but then there are times when you get distracted and this system could save you and any others involved .
