Default V70 2.0T Auto 2006 Engine knocking on idle

Hello,
I have a V70 2.0T auto with 87K on the clock. Its just started knocking on tick over and low revs, to the extent that it sounds like a diesel. Its fine when you rev and drive with revs on but at lower speeds with the throttle off it starts to knock. Also if you stop the engine and restart it disappears only to return after a few miles.

I have the bonnet up, which is about the limit of my expertise, and it sounds like its in the top end. I just want to know what to look for as have little faith in local dealer. They have said that they have never heard of it and that engine is "bullet proof"! Any help gratefully recieved.
Thanks

Dave

Try your alternator pulley - that was giving the same issue on mine. It was on 88k, scarily close to your mileage!

Slacken aux belt and try and move the pully up and down, any movement means the bearings are shot.

Hi Reggit,
Thanks for the reply, I'll take a look. Was it really the same symptoms? That's what i cant understand is why is disappears then comes back after restarting. It is spooky about the mileage and would be even more spooky if it was same fault. I'll take a look and keep you posted. All other ideas gratefully recieved too!!
Thanks again.

Oh yeah, I missed the bit about it disappearing - I think mine was a bit intermittent at first but not sure now - you couldn't hear it much over idle though due to the engine noise.

I seem to recall there's an issue with o rings in the oil pick up that can lead to oil starvation when idle, sometimes manifesting as intermittent tappet noise, but only at idle. Sound possible?

I also recalled there was a seal kit that fixed it at a reasonable price, at least without needing to remove the engine. I can't seem to any find apt links on these forums. Maybe I'm being thick, so try searching.

Or maybe somebody else can flesh out the details, assuming I haven't imagined it all?

I lost oil pressure for this very reason, engine note stayed the same - but I got a 'No oil pressure' and the oil can warning light come up.

New seals fixed it - didn't know there was a recall for it.

Here's a link to my thread about that issue (and extremely gunky sump), Clan provided part numbers for the required seals lowerdown on page 1.

Misunderstanding, the word 'recall' referred to retrieval of distant memories from my stodgy old brain, didn't mean to imply a factory recall.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the response, now that sounds like a plausable explanation?! it does sound likes its at the top end under the rocker cover, but i dont get any lights like Reggit described. I will admit (the shame) that its long due a service, so i may have some truly gunky oil in the old girl. It really is a mystery and i'll run these past my main dealer to see if any "lights" come on there! So far they've looked at me dimly.
I'm wondering if a posted video on you tube might help or be of any interest? Thanks once again to all and happy to hear other ideas.

Just an update for you all, changed the oil and not missed a beat since. Was very odd indeed!! The oil was a bit gloopy and some new stuff seemed to have done it some good. Fingers crossed it stays away now. Thanks again for all your help. :0)
