I used to be able to get 40 mpg around the Highlands with my '04 D5 if I kept the speed to a cruise controlled 50.
Unfortunately my wife wrote it off.
The 57 plate D5 I've replaced it with is hard put to exceed 30 mpg

in my quest to find what benefits I'm getting from my " improved " d5 engine I've just googled this

http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/car-reviews...e-1003111.html

now according to this volvo were out to improve mpg with the 185 engine, I think they went wrong somewhere , and it has "massive " torque at 1750 rpm, well I can believe that, my geartronic gearbox wont touch the engine between tickover and 2000 rpm if I put my foot down ! fear of damage I suspect , I'm wondering now if the improved d5 engine was aimed at lighter models !

I have an 05 reg 185bhp manual. It was giving about 28-29mpg in london and about 38ish on motorway. However, it all went down the hill ever since I started having problem with soot filter. I recently got the CAT and FAP removed and remapped the car to 230ish bhp. I have got down pipe conversion and K&N air filter. The car now runs like a dream and I can now achieve up to 30ish in town and 40ish mpg on motorway. Apart from mileage the biggest difference is in the overall performance and no soot filter BS.

I have a remap to 220bhp(ish) and a k&n and return similar <30mpg around town then 34> on a run. I have now noticed another slight difference in a change of fuel over two tanks in the last 2 weeks. Shell vPower seems to like the car more than Sainsbury's.

JXC90-do you find any torque issues on fwd with 230bhp, the tuner I used seemed to think XC90 owners had moaned and asked for a turn down to 210-220bhp as front wheels were happier than usual.
