Default 2003 V70 AWD 2.4 T SE..low compression

Hi,

Firstly thanks for adding me to the forum.
I have a new to me V70 as above. It has a misfire and my local garage has stated the diagnostics shows low compression in cylinder 3. They’re an MOT, service, suspension and quick repair sort of place so won’t do this kind of repair.

I’m looking for recommendations of a local garage that does does this kind of old school work as opposed to those scrap it it’s not worth it places. It’s too good a car to scrap or break.

If anyone knows of a place, I’m within striking distance of Leeds, Wakefield and Dewsbury. I can travel further for the right place.

Thanks
Carlos.

I'm not sure you can get an accurate and reliable low compression diagnosis from a diagnostics set up.
I would get a manual old school compression test done on each cylinder before deciding anything.

Loss of compression isn't usually a thing on Volvo 5 cylinder blocks.

Im hoping to find a garage to do those tests and repairs as necessary. Most of the garages I’ve contacted don’t appear to want to ‘open that can of worms!’ Not sure when mechanics died and technicians with laptops took over but they all just seem to want quick easy fix jobs or advise to scrap the motor.

As above, I'd want to know how the compression was checked. It needs a manual check with a pressure gauge. Can you ask the original garage how they checked the compression?

In fairness to the other garages, I'm an old school mechanic and I wouldn't "open that can of worms" either. I've had the head off mine to do a head gasket and it's a long job. By the time you've factored in parts and work needed once the head is off, cam belt etc, the bill's probably going to be what the car's worth. Chances are, something else completely unconnected will go wrong soon after and the customer will be back complaining.

To me, 2003 is yesterday, but it's now 18 years old. Mine's 2002 and only a year off joining my other vehicles on my classic insurance policy.

I understand the ‘economy’ of things, but if we only repaired cars because it was economically viable, there’d be no classics in the road. A car’s value is measured by the owner.

I’ll keep searching.

I have a similar issue with my V70 AWD R.(except I have zero compression on cylinder 2). Garages I have contacted in NE (save main dealer) don't want to "open that can of worms" either. I have space to store, and use of other vehicles so I am taking stock while I watch the footie. I don't have ability to remove head (suspect that should read "replace the head and get the car started again") and my initial impulse was to break for parts or sell to someone to repair. Lads on here made me think again about parting company with it, which I am doing but I'm not seeing any real options at present, but if England win, pigs really can fly so I might just find a place to repair the R

Keep us informed on progress please.

Cheers
Bob

I carried out a compression test this morning;
Cylinders 1, 4 & 5 - 160psi
Cylinder 2 - 150psi
Cylinder 3 - 10psi

The throw away attitude to motors sucks.

My big concern apart from getting someone to repair my issue is actually finding someone who i would trust to attempt the repair. When you don't move within the motor industry and have no friends who do either...how the heck do you choose someone to actually repair your car and not make matters worse.....?????
I am finding cost is not real issue ...trusting someone is...
Cheers Bob..
