Default Check s90 mileage with OBDII

Friends

is it possible to check the real mileage of a s90 using the OBDII?

The speedometer don't work sometimes so I'm not sure about the actual mileage of the car.
I've already replaced the ABS sensor on the real axle but the problem is stills there and Volvo says I have to change the instrumenti panel.

The odometer shows 320.000 KM, cambelt must be replaced at 360.000KM, so I would like to check real mileage to avoid driving the car too close to the cambelt end of life!

Any thoughts is really appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi,

I suspect not, although the ecu can store diagnostic info. But that info relates to the fault.
You certainly don't get mileage on a standard cheapo reader, maybe Volvo diagnostics would? But I am doubting that as the mileometer in these cars is mechanical for the most part and not electronic (although driven from the electronic input from the diff for speed) but there is still a cable for the rest (I believe).

Having said all that, I would be changing your Cam Belt and tensioner now anyway and wouldn't be leaving it until you got to your 360k.
Do the tensioner, that was what failed on my V90 a while ago.

Ciao sil.
My advice is...........Never, ever take any chances with a cambelt, do yourself a favour and change it, and the tensioner NOW, it doesn't cost much and you'll feel a lot happier knowing it's done.

Thankyou for your replies.

I'm getting some quotes for the distribution belt and extras.

Also a Volvo workshop said they can retrieve the actual mileage from the ECU through the OBDII port, another one is not so sure but they can try. I have an appointment next week for that so I'll post the results.

I would prefer to do the distribution belt job at the right mileage so I don't mess up the service booklet! ;-) Just joking... but if I can be sure it should be done in about 30.000 KM from now there is no rush to do the job immediately. I see from the service booklet that the previous full cambelt service was at 240.000 KM.

Thanks
Regards
Silvio

So you where right Des, they couldn't retrieve the mileage from the ECU in Volvo, even with their expensive scanner.

Their quote for a full cambelt replacement is about Euro 550, including water pump and all other related parts, not too bad as I've been quoted about Euro 750 a couple of months ago in Sweden. Unfortunately they are fully booked and they can't do it before vacation.

Next thing I've done is try to guess the approx mileage from invoices and MOT reports of the past years. It's been a long job but considering the problem has showed up 4 years ago first time and from the difference in mileage on the previous documents I can say roughly 2500 KM/year are missed since the problem started. If this calculation could be true I would be well below the cambelt service timeline (330.000 aprox vs 360.000).

Could you spot any weakness in my guessing?

Many thanks

Hi,

It would be worth while pulling the top cover off and checking the condition of both the belt and the tensioner before you pop off on your adventures.

I would also take it easy on your holiday journey, nothing too excessive (no Nürburgring for example!) so you get back all in one piece..

Nürburgring temptation is strong as I'll travel in Germany but I'll try to drive slow and avoid going over 90mph for the sake of fuel economy also. Above all I'm going on vacation with plenty of time and trying to relax.

I'll have a look under the cambelt cover today, I'm pretty sure the belt is ok as it has been changed 4 years ago.

Cheers
