That is the "Choke" , you pull the knob out to start from cold , you must have a carburettor engine ?

The 480 was the first of the 400 series launched June 1987 at £ 10880
the dealers had to go down to swansea area to pick them up from an area of the M4 which was not yet opened for their launch parties which they used to have back then ..There must have been around 300 lined up . they were all red and a couple of months later were on D registration plates ( aug 1987 ) . I think Ford had a similar idea with the escort regarding dealers picking up new models .

And by all accounts quite a few of those brand new 480s broke down on their way back to the various dealers - an inauspicious start for a car that was to be plagued with problems in its early form....

I seem to recall the various Volvo field staff collecting the dealers and went to the NEC to drive them home and yes they were all D reg Red ones and as previously reported a number broke down on the way home.

The main dealer launch was at Donington where we had a hour on the track with professional racing drivers beating the hell out of 480ES, some even lasted the whole day!! but certainly a XR3i beater.

wasn't it John Watson there doing the driving ? Those early B18E engines had a beautiful stainless steel tubular exhaust manifold and twin throttle body giving 115 bhp they did really go well , That particular engine only lasted about 2 years though . Before being de tuned .

We also had a mod for the the turbo ones as well. A brake pipe clamp on the wastegate valve rubber pipe !!. They went well for a while and then a warranty claim!!

There was a safety cut out mapped in at 1 bar boost you would have bound to be hitting that with a clamped wastegate hose .
I did it by controlling the turbo control valve with the correct signal manually , i could wind the boost up from 9 psi to about 13 psi , just below the cut out point which resulted in 155 bhp 0-60 in 7 seconds and 130 + mph .. The Fuel and ignition control units are already mapped to this , the boost was cut down to 120 bhp for production though , utterly reliable by the way, proved over 100,000 miles on at least 6 cars I did .. one essential mod was some Koni front suspension dampers to stop it lifting under full power! Those were the days ....
