for sometime now like 15,000 miles or so on idle the car sometimes has a loud knocking coming from engine It has puzzled me for some time as it does not allways do it especialy when I take it to a garage for their opinion just my luck.but today I managed to get two garages opinions to what it could be and both said it's the dmf when I dip the clutch it disappears instantly so I proceeded to get a quote from Volvo and it was £1763.38 does this price sound about right seems a bit pricey it's for dmf clutch kit any opinions or other prices people have paid would be appreciated many thanks 🍻

I've seen some people try and get a solid flywheel replacement (not on a volvo mind). They're not usually quite so dear. Half of that is probably labour though

I have heard from a few people a diesel with a single flywheel is not very nice to drive, a lot of people buy a Volvo for a smooth comfortable drive amongst other things.
I would probably stick to a dmf.

I have known quite a few to do this and then get fed up with the noise and vibration that they then change back to a DMF.
The old saying buy right buy once comes to mind.

Knock the one off the front off the price and your getting close. My clutch went and I was quoted £880 by Paul Rigby Volvo...... £1763 is an outrageous quote, find a Volvo Indy or a clutch specialist and get them to quote it.
Just noticed it's a D5.... I still think they're taking you for a ride, get more quotes

I've just put a post on another Volvo site to see if that quotes realistic? I'll let you know if I hear something?

£1763 from a dealer sounds about right. The whole subframe does need to come out on the 5 cylinder in order to remove the gearbox so it's mostly labour, as I think book time is around 8 hours minimum. The dual mass flywheel itself will be a few hundred pounds, plus another couple of hundred or more for the clutch kit (these are all genuine Volvo parts at a dealer), plus a grand labour sounds about right. I'd get a quote from a trusted independent and see how it differs, but DMF is an expensive job unfortunately.

It's mad. I've got a C30 D3, which is the 5 cylinder engine, and I'm dreading the day that fails. Even though I'm a mechanic, I'd be tempted to just pay someone else to do it so I can avoid the hassle. Fabulous engines and lovely to drive, but it is crammed into that Ford Focus engine bay which has it's perils.

I'll be phoning up the Indy in the morning first thing for a quote is there anything else other than the dmf clutch that could need replacing as some Indys might not have the knowledge of the d5 that volvo have.ie had the cam belt done by Indy when I first bought the car because I thought 500 squid was expensive from main dealer only to realise they do the aux belts, water pump, tensioner in with that price so had them done at a later date as I love the car and want plenty more miles currently on 129,000 but tight as a ducks asse still and a quality drive mpg 43 av 52 on motorway
