is this problem my ETM?
i have had my V70 for about 4 months now
(2000 Wreg 2.4auto 140hp 92,00miles) only when stationary and in auto box is in drive do i get the engine hunting between 600-800rpm, it is as regular as clockwork as well. it doesent happen in park or neutral though so i often slip it into neutral when waiting at traffic lights. are these the initial signs of ETM failure? if i get the ETM replaced will they replace it with another defective unit? |

Hi,
It may well be the first signs of the unit failing. Dealer will initially do a software update and clean of the throttle module/ETM That should be free. Next step is to have a, as you say, defective unit fitted! However, they recondition failed units ready for swapping out... Current post suggest that the cost of the swap is about £200.. You have the opportunity sue the dealer (and Volvo UK) and get your money back.. Someone suggested that there may be Bosch units being used to replace failed Marinelli units in the near future.. What truth there is in this, I have not heard.... Des. . .

Hi Des,
May I ask where did you hear that Bosch units may be used to replace failed Marinelli units in the near future? This could be good news! Incidentally, I recently communicated with BBC TV Watchdog about this issue. My impression is that they will reinvestigate if there is sufficient consumer concern. There does not seem to be much discussion here these days. Have people resigned themselves to being ripped off and placed in danger? Melvyn |

Bosch replacement ETM
Hi Melvyn,
I recently posted my good experiences at SW Autos of Headcorn in Kent, who thoroughly cleaned the ETM on my 2000 W reg. V70 AWD Classic as well as other work required. When I went to pick it up from them they suggested that I leave badgering my local Volvo dealer for a couple of months as Volvo were about to "roll out" a Bosch replacement for the original unit. I cannot however verify whether or not this is the case. Best regards Rob. |

My 1999 V70 started doing exactly the same. Any news on yours yet?

For what it's worth ...
I had the clean and software update done to mine recently. Symptoms over the last 3-4 months (and possibly longer) were: - Erratic idle - Stall on start (was getting increasingly frequent) - General feeling of malaise in the cruise, also reported as slight hesitation - ETS light came on once after several hours on the road on very hot day 3 months ago. Did not go into limp home mode, but could get more than about 3000rpm out of engine. (stop and restart cured it, continued journey) - Last month: ETS came on once after medium journey (normal weather), then came on twice on same day in damp foggy weather After the fix? Stable idle (about 800 rpm), power delivery OK, but does not feel as smooth as it was before above symptoms began to show. Have also had slight throttle surge when (eg) slowing down and going round roundabouts (indeterminate, but 'something' happening). Im left with the feeling that it's only a question of time before Throttle Body fails. Engine Management Light remains on, but O2 sensor identified as problem - not yet replaced. V70 2000 Classic. |

It would be very difficult to fit the Bosch unit as the electronics are rather different to the Magneti Marelli ones . Hopefully the new Magneti Marelli ones are inmproved quality ...
