Default '85 244 Dl Clutch identification

Hello,

I intend to replace the clutch kit in the next spring.

As I haven't done before this, on a 240 (244 in fact) - mine, I would like to make sure that I will order the correct type of pressure plate, disc and bearing.

In the Haynes manual I have '88 edition with green covers it says that the diameter of the plate is 215.9mm.

But there are 2 types of clutch cover.

Could anyone tell me which type of clutch cover does mine have?

'85 244 Dl Saloon, LHD, with B 200K engine and 5 speed M 47 transmission

Will get back with a photo of those 2 types of clutch covers asap.

Many thanks!

I don't know what you mean by disc - the "other" part of a clutch is the engine flywheel (with starter ring gear on it) which you don't normally change. Do you mean (friction) plate, cover, and bearing? The last clutch kit I had done (a different vehicle) was those three parts. If you do mean plate/cover/bearing then the manual says it doesn't matter which type you use as they (complete three part kit) are interchangeable. You just can't mix'n'match components from the different kits.

If in doubt, remove yours and take it down to the supplier for an exact match.

Thanks Michael for your message.

I meant friction plate, cover and bearing.

I asked you guys as the 244 is my daily driver so I can't really take it apart to check for the clutch kit type and after wait for the supplier to get it and finally mount it on the car.

You are right Clan.

But I am not ordering genuine Volvo parts most of the time as they are pretty expensive for our incomes (in Romania) and some no longer available + the delivery delay is 2 to 3 weeks!!!

Having in mind all of these I order and use most of the time aftermarket parts which are supplied in 2 or 3 days usually, maximum wait time 1 week, but good quality ones, not the cheapest.

German made, most of them.

Thanks guys + Happy New Year!

Very helpful indeed Paul.
Thank you!

A reference for the Sachs clutch kit + a price to compare.

All the best!

Vic.

Just one last question regarding the clutch replacement:

- do I need a clutch alignment tool when replacing one, in case of my 240, of course?

If so could you tell me the diameter of the tool / adaptor so I can know what to look for?

Thanks again.

One typical alignment tool is the handle of a large ratchet drive ... Anything that fits in will do.
