Default xc90 wheel bearings

I have been battling my Volvo dealer since may 2012 over a thrumming type sound on my 2009 XC90, and before the warranty expired i reported it to them, only for them to have kept it on 3 separate occasions to tell me the wheel bearings were fine and it was tyre noise and loose heat shields. Subsequently after the warranty expired and the noise increased, [and] after my insistence on checking the bearings carefully they finally admitted it was the rear nearside bearing and 2 weeks ago replaced it, Volvo undertook 90% of the cost.... Today I received a rather panicky call from the dealer telling me that Volvo had instructed them to recall my XC90 asap to replace the offside rear wheel bearing and refund my 10% contribution to the one replaced recently. It has worried me somewhat as i believe the failed bearing was returned to volvo who had examined the failure on it and then ordered my recall for the other bearing to be replaced at no cost to me...the dealer denied this and said this was a recent recall decision for some xc90's. and therefore I was wondering if any of you have had a recall for rear wheel bearing replacements ??

They havent handled this properly , it is obvious they havent checked your cars paperwork and bulletins , there IS a corrective action listed and they should have investicated and replaced both rear wheel bearings with the addition of water thrower rings free of any charge , at least you got the correct action in the end .

thanks, I thought so,
convincing them i had a bearing failure was hard work. I suspect they took a closer look at the bearing they removed and found something dodgy and thus the recall of my car for the opposite rear bearing. when i asked them if a general recall had been decided, they were suspiciously evasive...?

no thats not the case ,
the reason they rushed your car back in to have the other side done is probably that volvo wouldnt pay them unless they did it by the book and did the other side too . !

Oh i see, that makes sense, as I'm sure i have read posts relating to replacing them in pairs. thanks,
thanks also to anyone who has posted on this subject before as without reading their stories and advice i wouldn't have been any wiser and just accepted the nonsense they were feeding me.

Glad it got sorted in the end, as Clan mentioned it was probably only highlighted after the work was done & paperwork sent in, and at least they went down the right road in the end (no pun intended)
I have a droning sound coming from the rear too, at first I wondered if it might be a dry diff but think it's probably the wheel bearings right enough, will get them checked soon at the service which will not be at the local dealer, but an independant garage, car is MY 2004 with 82k miles

2009 XC90 D5 R Design with 23k miles and had to have (2) new rear wheel bearings fitted this week albeit under warranty - dealer was surprised this was necessary after so few miles.
