Recoup some costs on you timing and locking tools
Hi,
Has anyone in the forum ever changed the timing belt on a 940/740 2.4 turbo diesel and still have the tools (locking tools, tensioner gauge etc) lying around in their garage - crying out to be used again? We'll I'm willing to part with some cash to help pay for the cost of these, as I know there are not cheap. I'm based in Newport, Gwent & willing to travel some distance, pick up, & agree sensible cash/deposit then return then back to you. Many thanks, GeeJay Last edited by GeeJay; Feb 28th, 2010 at 19:39. |

I think this is going to be a garage job unless you are good- official volvo workshop time for belts is 8 hours! I managed to get my td done for £200 + parts by an independant who borrowed the tools, I don't know anyone who has them and they are still mega expensive to buy on the odd occasion they come up on ebay

You can have a loan of mine, only problem is that it's rather a long way.

Jor,
To give you a brief update - I've stripped the car down to the infamous crankshaft pulley..atleast there's plenty of room now to work on the engine. A couple of questions if I may for setting up the timing, is the no.1 cylinder counted as the cylinder nearest the firewall, ie nearest the fuel pump belt/side? I think it is ...just what to get this 100% clear. Looks like the crankshaft bolt is a 32 mm hex, any chance of confirming this as it was difficult to measure in its recess. I'll let you know how I get on with the ' home made' special tools, its very kind of you to offer yours - if they work I'll will then be able to offer them to others too in the S. Wales area. Thanks again for your support, Gary |

replacing belt
Cylinder one is at the front Gary, but the check is the O mark on the flywheel at the back of the engine. The bolt is 27mm and the high torque might mean that the standard 1/2 wrench won't do it as they go up to 210Nm or so, in which case get a 3/4 wrench and a reducer.
Inc. just had a look at the d24 manual at k-jet.org, the pictures come out really well, much better than the book from Volvo, which is a photocopy anyway, but one that is far too dark so that detail in the pics can't be made out. jor
