Default Running a large car vs smaller car ?

I have An S80 auto D5 do approx 13k a year and average approx 38 to 40 mpg.

I worked out if I got a smaller car I could save around £1200 a year on fuel, insurance and tax.

Paying quite a premium to drive a big auto car, has anyone thought about down sizing and if so to what car would you choose?

Our 2007 S80 went for a 2017 VW Golf. Once the Golf had grown so I could get a comfy seating position and then sit behind myself and it had the same level of equipment the 2007 S80 had, it was sensible to change.

I do miss the power, the 1.6 diesel is good, but lacks midrange grunt.

I think when you see what you get offered for your car the best advice is to keep the one you know.
if you are used to a D5 I dont think any of these cars with small engines will work out anything other than "frustrating"

Both the S80 and the Golf was the car my wife was the main driver of. She was happy to trade performance for mpg and lower tax and clearly in the 10 years between cars, the smaller one had caught up in terms of gadgets and refinement.

yes I agree , spending say £15000 ( or more ! ) on the golf isn't exactly saving money ..

I agree with 'Clan' and 'Considered1'. Depreciation is, to a degree, hidden until you come to sell, whereas you see the fuel cost every time that you fill up. Depending on your circumstances, the former can very easily cost you more per mile than the latter.

Regards. John.

I’ve found Volvo V60 to be cheaper to insure than a Toyota Yaris! Depends on lots of factors, small cars spend more time sat at junctions waiting to find a gap big enough to go and people are much less likely to let you into traffic, or at least that is my experience.

Thought about getting something like a used V50/C30/S40 1.6 DRIVe? Low tax and high MPG it's about as cheap as they come while still offering that certain something only a Volvo can! Depreciation is less of a factor, too, if you buy something that's already lost a lot of value.

What are later D5 Volvo like on fuel? E.g those early V60s and S60s that had something like £30 road tax?

Getting a smaller car with cruise, xexons and decent audio is hard.

I do like the Toyota Avensis, mpg on the petrol looks good and also do an auto. Not sure what small car would be on the list.

My collection consists of three 940 estates and a Mk2 VW Scirocco. I use two of the 940s as daily drivers. Reliable, comfortable and convenient if you happen to pop to B&Q after work for a 3m length of something.
