Default Fanheater blowing cool air and coolant service light on

Hi All,

I’ve had the following issue for the past 3 winters and wonder if someone might know of a solution or if they’re linked
At about the same time every year when the temperature reaches zero i receive
1) a message saying Coolant System Service Required - I also noticed that even after running the car for only 2-3 mins on my drive then turning the ignition off, the fan starts. This warning goes as soon as the weather hits about 2 degrees.
2) at the same time (although it could be just because the weathers cooler) it feels like the interior fan heater stops warming the air and is barely warm when set to “high”.
3) when the fan heater is not on dashboard demist it fogs up the interior within about 30 seconds so I’m constantly cycling between demist and normal fan operation

Couid these 3 things be linked in any way and can anyone diagnosis the issue?
Thanks

Hi,
It’s a 2009 s80 D5.
Could a stuck thermostat be responsible for all the issues I’m seeing? Are they easy to fix?

IIRC changing a thermostat is a major job on the D5 when the engine is in the car. It certainly is in the XC70. I was always told that regular thermostat replacement every 3 or 4 years would keep the cooling system in top shape and was an inexpensive and easy consumable replacement. Apparently no so with Volvo and owners wait until the damn things fail. I don't know if the units that Volvo fit are better quality than the easy to fit jobs on other cars but it's not just a 3 housing bolt job to change it.

Yes that message related to the engine running too hot or cold you need a new thermostat.. Then you can experience the full power of a Volvo heater !

It's on this particular car and engine models they decided to place the thermostat in about the most inaccessible place they could imagine. You can hardly see it.

Earlier V70, for example, have them located at about the first place you touch when you go near the engine.
