I like the idea of ERS. Volvo have overcome the security issues as the car remains locked when in operation. When you unlock the car, the engine is turned off hence no theft risk.

Many have mentioned turning their engine on, but with most cars you cannot lock the car when outside so it is open to theft.

Like many laws, the UK restriction is old and does not take account of technology advances. I feel this is actually a safety enhancement as how often do we get into the car and drive off before the windows have completely cleared

His car can be left running on a public highway with no one in it.
So can yours.
Clearly, the fact that it can be done, isn't in itself illegal.

He never mentioned leaving the car running on a public highway.

It might be deemed to be a modified car which might have insurance implications, but that's nothing to do with leaving a engine running unattended on a public highway.

Have they done research that shows no Volvo owners have drives or garages?
Surely you wouldn't want to do a remote start while the car is parked in a garage. The carbon monoxide could easily be lethal!

The V60 hybrid, which does have remote "conditioning" has to be explicitly told that it's parked outside before it uses its diesel heater.

That makes Volvo's non UK logic make even less sense if it is fitted to one model. Sound like there is some sort of miss communication within Volvo. You can't have one model supplied with the system and all the rest "illegal" with it.

But, technically, the engine isn't running. I don't know about other Volvo models, but the hybrid has a separate diesel heater since converting electricity back into heat is a terrible waste.

yes different system

I was told it was the UK insurance companies that kicked up a fuss.

Guess you could intoxicate next doors unsupervised child with your unattended car!

What about tractors? They are frequently running without any one in them while the PTO runs machinery like a sawmill for instance. It's a running stationary vehicle.

Insurance companies, I can see it. There are loads of vehicles they won't insure here. Thankfully the NFU will insure anything that the other companies won't thank goodness. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to insure our house, (even though it's been here 500 years) Land Rover, and tractor.

It turns out you can remove the keyfob from the car with running engine, but you can not lock the car. So WTF?
I'm based in Ireland for example and have contacted all the main Volvo dealers. When reading the Volvo Accessory portal, Ireland is not among the exempted countries, but the dealers are all telling me the ERS accessory is not available for my car.
So fare play to you for sharing the steps. I was going to attempt the same approach anyway, but now it would be even easier.

To the OP, well done sir!
Nothing is quite as satisfying as 'sticking it to the man'!

Where there is a will, there's a way.

To the po-faced arguing about laws and insurance, well I think its illegal to speed, those without sin, cast the first stone.
