Pics from last night. Made a start at pulling the inner wing shotgun apart. It looks like my top section had been replaced one time before as well and had a patch welded over some rust along the side. It probably would have held up for a couple of years the way it was before it needed fixing but thought I may as well do it all properly now. Might try and keep the seam where the bulk head closing panel attaches to the inner wing so it looks original.

a small update from me but progress nonetheless!
getting on to preparing the drivers side for the new shotgun. found a bit of rust so cut it out. I made up a template for the repair with cardboard, cut some 1.2mm steel and prepped for welding. Mitch then tacked it in place and let me loose doing the rest of it! brave man given i'm only starting to pick up welding but I'm keen to get good at it for future projects of mine. Sadly i forgot to take a picture of the hole but heres the cardboard template on top of the repair to show what had been welded in. heres what it looked like after a bit of tidying up with a flapper disc on the grinder then a few more choice welds and tidyed up further: and heres with the shotgun held roughly in place for a look-see It may not seem like a lot to some people but to me this is a big leap forward being able to weld!! Nick

Best investment I ever made in the Amazon was a ten week evening course in MIG welding, and as they say on the MIG welding forums you recoup the cost of the equiptment very quickly when you take into account a couple of days labour charges and you know how well (or not) its been done.

I haven't been very productive lately but fitted up the shotgun repair tonight and tacked it in position. Looks spot on when I did a trial fit of the wing so will weld it up when I'm next at the workshop. Might try tig for a few of the areas but will have a practice first. Some pics of how I've gone about fitting the repair panel.

More excellent progress!
And well done with the welding Nick; that looks good. Ste and I are likely to do a road-trip up to Aberdeen in March/April in the 245 turbo, so looking forward to meeting you Mitch, and the Amazon! John |

If you don't take as much time and care lining up this panel or if you take your Amazon to a partially sighted hippy like I did, your wing will look as wonky as this when you re-hang it...

Thanks Adam, I reckon I've got it better than it was originally, don't think you could get it perfect but so far I'm happy how it's is.
