Very Disappointed with my S40
We purchased our 1998 S49 when I finished work after an accident in 2001, it was out third Volvo as we had owned a 244 and a 240 previously. My sons also chose Volvos after we brain washed them about how reliable and safe they were.
To bitter disappointment early this year we had a major short circuit which I have since read similar stories from other owners as well. After paying to have the vehicle freighted down to Brisbane and fixed, it was returned and seemed to be OK. Some weeks after it had been repaired, the instrument lights came on but all seemed to be working. I rang Volvo and was told it was most likely it was the alternator. I duly took it to an auto electrician and was informed that it was all burnt out and was too far gone to repair, so we were advised to have a new unit fitted. To cut a long story short, we did that and it seems to have fixed it. My disappointment is that: 1. The shortcurcuit under the radiator seems to be common fault with S40s, 2. The original major shortcurcuit most likely damaged the alternator as well. 3. The cost of repairing the trouble. 4. None of the trouble experienced was caused by neglect or heavy work as the car has only just turned up 60,000km. I am wondering if any other S40 owners have similar stories as I am of the opinion that Volvo has a responsibility in there somewhere, what do others think. |
