Default V90 grip

Has anyone else experienced a lack of traction in a V90 (2wd D4 R Design) when starting on steep hills?
This has happened to me on a few occasions, where, for example, to negotiate a steep junction, I have had to do a three point turn and the wheels just spin.
I have tried using the paddles to select a lower gear, but only by persevering, adjusting steering angle and, where possible having a bit of a run at it, have I been able to get moving.
Admittedly this doesn’t happen often (once in Wales and a few times in rural Cornwall), but it has had me concerned that I would be stuck!
Any tips?

Take your diver boots off. On a serious note have you tried manually selecting 2nd. Bit less torque for the tyres to deal with. You mentioned using the paddles to select a 'lower gear', did you mean a higher gear? Does this happen in damp greasy conditions or when the road is completely dry. D4 has plenty of torque so should easily pull away on a incline in 2nd gear. Guessing the tyres still have good tread on them and at the right pressure. If you have the big wheel, wide tyre combo could possibly be a reason.

Welcome to summer tyres on cold wet roads.

My previous Michelin Primacy tyres on the V90 were the worst for this. Up to getting a new car recently, I've had Michelin all season installed. No such issues with those.

I could get the wheels of my V90 D4 (Michelin Primacy) to spin at the drop of a hat. My V70 D3 (Contisport 3) was even worse and I'm no boy racer. My present V90 D5 AWD is fine.

V90 has a fair amount of weight over the back axle I would imagine too, even more accentuated on an incline.

Select 2nd or 3rd to start, squeeeeeeeeeze :-D

Also, try waiting until the hill hold lets off maybe, perhaps its holding on too much? (Not sure if you can turn it off)

I agree with you on that. And why not select driver mode Off- Road??

Yes. Michelin all season are good. And also Michelin Latitude Sport 3 255/45 R20 XL VOL ACOUSTIC. Good grip on those tyres. Even knowing they are summer tyres. But they're good even on wet roads and cold wet weather.

Thanks for the comments. I was being very delicate with my right foot! The car is on standard 18” wheels with new Pirelli volvo specific tyres (as supplied on it from new). These tyres have only done about 2000 miles.

The AWD version would be fine, but it does feel as though, with summer tyres, there is not enough weight over the front wheels.

I will try holding it in 2nd next time using the gearshift rather than trying to use the paddles.

There is no such mode on a V90.
