Hi I have a Volvo 850 - 1994 L Reg and was looking to reset my ECU. I have no clue on how to do it.... Well I might but it has never worked in the past. (Disconnect battery for so long)

Is there a "proper" way to reset the ECU on my car.

Any help would be great thanks.

Well..... Not really. BUT, thank you for that useful page anyway.

I was looking to reset the ECU. See I have recently bought the car and wanted to let the car "re-learn" MY driving pattern.

Some people say to disconnect the battery for so long & this should drain the power from the ECU, then you start your engine let it warm up and drive away..... WELL, this all sounds good but I think that is only for certain cars. Some maybe different. I figured, as this is a Volvo engine there must be some complicated way of resetting the ECU.

Thanks anyway, and yes you get a slice of

I doubt very much that the ECU in a '94 850 will be sophisticated enough to learn a particular driver's driving style. In fact to tell the truth I've never heard of any ECU doing that. The ECU is programmed to follow set rules about ignition timing and injector opening intervals based on preprogrammed settings and feedback from the various sensors. As far as I know the only way to change their default settings is to have the ECU remapped or chipped at considerable expense.

The auto gearbox ECU will learn a style and adapt but all you have to do is drive it a short time .
The engine ECU will adapt too , but adapt for the most efficient and lowest emmisions rather than your driving style . It will adapt quickly to some parameters and slowly to others .

Even the pre-adaptive gearboxes that would be on a 94 car?

I know it will factor in temp and wear rates / engagement times of gears and such, but does the non-adaptive gearbox(es) really do that much adapting, outside of the mode selects?
