SU HS6 Needles
Hi all.
A question for the more technically-minded among you ... Is there a better needle than the stock B18 ZH for twin SU HS6 carbs when attached to a B18 bored out to B20 spec? I spoke to a nice man at Burlen who basically said 'stick ZHs in them then take it to a rolling road and take readings with different ones 'til you find the best one'. Much as that might be the best move, I'm a) too tight to do such a thing right now and b) figured I can't be the only person with this configuration, so I might as well ask around and see what others have done. And by 'ask around', I obviously mean 'ask the forum'. Any suggestions gratefully received. -Tom |

Needles...
Hi Tom,
I have found the KD needles better in my P1800 than the ZD as a good temporary set up until I get the chance to experiment a bit more. However, as you probably know, standard needles in any hopped up engine are never going to release its full potential. I have recently acquired a whole load of different Needles from a bloke who used to build rally spec B series engines and will be experimenting to see which ones best match my set up. It'll be a bit of trial and error, but for my application, it sure beats the expense of hiring the services of a rolling road. I strongly recommend too that you get hold of a copy of 'How to Build & Power Tune SU Carburetors' by Des Hammill ISBN 13 978-1-903706-98-5. (about £12) You should have no problem getting it through Amazon. I have found this book very informative and down to earth. All the best, Gordon |
