Default 850 too cool.

Volvo 850 T5
Replaced coolant temp sensor and coolant, approx 50/50 glycol/deionised water. Drained system by removing the lower radiator hose.

Next days commute (4 miles) noticed car takes longer to warm up, needle reaches 3 o clock pos and sits there, used to take about 10 mins but took 20.

Did a longer journey today at higher speeds 15 miles and needle reaches steady state but never got over 4 o clock. Air coming out of vents does not feel as hot.
If car is left stationary needle will reach 3 o clock and fan keeps it there so i dont think the cts is faulty.

Surely a coolant change cannot account for this, afaik it*was the original stuff that is 20 yrs old. Thermostat was not touched.

Can only think thermostat is stuck open.

Should i be concerned?

I will get IR thermometer to measure coolant temp.

Sounds like an open thermostat to me.

You might as well replace thermostat too, especially if it's never been replaced.

Mine did that and it was the thermostat - I didn't change all the coolant before, though.

Less than £50 at a garage to get it swapped including the part IIRC.

It's cheaper if you ring the main dealer direct, that applies to most dealers!!

Hi 02GF74

Possibly just a stuck thermostat - unrelated to the change of coolant, but now you have paid the cooling system more attention you have noticed the fault.

Easy fix, so long as you dont mess up the 2 screws holding it in. Be sure to get the right size Torq bit.
