Towbar Condition
Hi,
My Volvo V90 MY19 has they factory fitted Towbar and having not used it since September last year, I was surprised to say the least at the condition of it. I have attached a few pics and would welcome any comments or advice as to why it looks this way. If it just needs a clean then again I would welcome advice on what I should use. Thanks Last edited by dmk821150; Jul 1st, 2020 at 22:00. |

Hi,
I note your location and my first thought was as it gets a little cold up there in winter, therefore salt may have something to do with it. I am sure someone will be around soon to put me right. The same tow bar is fitted to my V90 and it dosen't look like that.

The ball on my tow bar does rust like that as well if it has not been used for a couple of months or so.
It is easily cleaned up with a bit of coarse wire wool, but I have now taken to wiping the ball with a bit of light grease after use. This is not a problem if I am using the trailer next time, but I have to remember to clean it off with some thinners on a rag if I am going to tow the caravan.

A goor rub with a green Scotch Brite pad and a wipe over with brake cleaner or isopropyl alcohol

Wouldn’t hurt to clean it all off and paint it with some Hammerite except the towball of course!
Other paints are available.

If this is one that swivels away automatically, the only way I found of keeping the ball in good condition was to coat with grease after use.
Then clean off with brake cleaner if using caravan hitch with stabilser pads. I'm never getting that type again, getting a removable one again this time. Best solution by far IMO. |

I am led to believe that we must not grease the ball.
