Default gearbox fluid change, too cheap ?

I've just recieved a quote from hallmark volvo (Stockport ) for a fluid change on my 185 d5 for £91.50 inc. vat and and reset level counters, they quote £35 for the oil, can anyone enlighten me , and has anyone used them ?

Sounds too cheap unless its a deal to hook you in. Which transmission is it?

6 speed geartronic, I'll get back to them , but Ive never questioned a garage because theyre too cheap before ! warrington volvo quoted me around £300 , describing the proceedure to justify the cost , which I understand , but why would a longstanding volvo indie quote me for " cheap" oil if it may kill my box ?

**** up most likely, when they come to order the oil using your reg number i expect the cost would change. I was quoted £180 from a tx specialist for that box.

The JWS3309 oil from Volvo is approx. £40 for 4ltr bottle from Volvo so the £35 + vat sounds about right for the parts required. I'm sure they are just quoting for a simple drain and refill procedure so will take 20 to 30 min to conduct so the labour cost could sound right too.

I must admit it does sound a little cheap and would just clarify what you have been quoted for and using what type of oil. Get a written quote if you can then they can't go back on it later.

Go back and ask them if it is a full transmission oil change or just a sump dump and re-fill then proceed from there - Mike

thats what Im thinking , a simply drain and refill , but I'll keep looking till I find a garage that offers a flush and replace service , I'm a bit dubious of a garage that doesnt do this as the norm

I don't think any of the tiptronic autoboxes fitted to the D5 XC90 can be changed properly with a simple empty refill procedure. My 2002 V70 D5 auto can, but not my 03 XC90 D5. Has to be pumped out with the engine running refilling as it comes out. Needs about 10 litres of oil to do a change. That's £130 for the synthetic ATF I use.

All auto box units have to be running to pump the old oil out of the valve block and torque converter, it has never been possible to drain all the fluid from the sump plug with an autobox, a sump drain will typically drain 50% of what is in the box - Mike
