It's funny, right after reading stuarts post about rough idling/cutting out i was driving home and just as i was taking my foot off the gas to change down the engine died. Thing is at the time i was thundering over the tay road bridge into a headwind/blizzard ,a slushy one at that ! Foolishly because of the snow i had chosen my alternative transport which is a tad less civilised than the amazon, being a 1964 battlefield ambulance.
The volvo was obviously sat outside the house, livid at being left home alone while i was off galavanting in the white stuff, snow that is not disco dust! Anyhow, clearly put a hex on the ambulance. The windscreen wipers died half way over the bridge then the engine but luckily there was so much momentum behind the beastie it fired up again when i released the clutch. Two more cut outs before i got home though, each time as i pulled up at a junction. It's a zenith carb so i'm thinking the float is obviously up to no good and maybe the bowl is full of crud.
So stuart if your reading this i recon a scrubbed up carb in pieces on the work bench is a sound move. I think in my case though i should just sell my ambulance and lavish more attention on my amazon, you'd never think she was a swede, more of a latin temperament !

sure its not electircal? that was one of the most fun things about driving my old kombi, every time i said somethign nice about it it stopped, one occasion was similar to what you mention, i was heading down a fast road, dropped the clutch as i got up to a round about and she stopped, started her up again but as soon as i took my foot off the gas with the clutch in she would fail again. ended up being an idle wire connected to the coil had fallen off.

Hmm, i wasn't thinking electrical i just assumed it was the vindictive nature of a spurned volvo. Actually every time i buy petrol from a jet garage i always have trouble, think its full of crud. The thing is when i'm driving the ambulance i can't risk passing a petrol station without dropping in, it's a thirsty beast. Fortunately the amazon has a positively bird like appetite in comparison. I try to make sure i always buy the same higher octane from the tesco pump when it's needing a drink.

Whats all this talk about idle wires! Stick an SU on it. Job done for life . No gadgets, no nonsense, no problem. Thats why we drive amazons because they are no nonsense driving.
