if it starts throwing wobbly's i would change the fuel filter, this is your first time at running out of fuel how many times has the car run out before you had it, and how much crap has gone in the system you just do not no. what i do no is these injectors will throw the dummy out if contaminated.plus i am not being a drama queen so there

Suitably told off from everyone!!!
Had a new fuel filter last year and will put a new one in over the next few weeks. Hopefully the filter will do its job and stop anything getting to the injectors in the meantime Will treat the car to some V-Power |

No special procedure is called for after running the tank dry.
Why does everyone suppose that running out of fuel introduces crap into the system? It's an old wives' tale. The pickup is at the bottom of the tank and would suck up any debris there even if the tank were full! Greg |

Got caught out last year between service staions whilst towing on the M5, fuel gauge read 0 miles left and Exeter services were 15 miles plus away, we made it OK but must have been extremely close to stopping.
In my defence, my wife drives the motorways, kids watch dvd's and I nod. Down side to running it so low was it cost £97 to fill up... |

The XC is my wife's car, she was going to put some fuel in on Monday!!
Good lesson learned though, ours was showing 55 miles to empty, will never let it show less than 100 now. Will make sure i get some hi viz jackets for the kids tomorrow as we stopped in the outside lane of a busy roundabout and, needless to stay, got out of the car and well clear of traffic. Fortunately there was a Highways Agency car not far behind and they towed us off the roundabout to a safer location. |

Hi Viz jackets are are a really good idea, they are compulsory in much of Europe, when I moved to Spain I thought what a palaver having to buy these but they are not expensive and make so much sense if you break down somewhere unlit. I always carry one for each passenger even though we are back in the UK now.
Ye the old crud in the bottom of the tank is one of those convenient myths that just seem to make sense but have little reality behind them. If there is crud it will find its way to the filter no matter how much fuel is in there. The manual says no action is needed - worth keeping one in the car to save guessing at such times. |
