2002 XC70 AWD problems??
After selling my fwd V70R, I have been offered an XC at much cheapness from a work collegue.
I am aware of AWD problems on the Classic models, but have no experience of the AWD system on the phase 2 series. Is the AWD system the same as the Classic, or is it a different system. What known problems are there (if any) on this model. Many thanks

The first models had the same AWD as the previous "classic" until 2002 / 2003, which was changed to Haldex Gen 2 and then Gen 3 in 2006.
Make sure you have 4 driven wheels and there are no warnings in the dashboard / on VIDA/OBD II and no noises. If you have a ramp or can lift the car off the ground with all 4 wheels check they are all turning. AWD can be expensive if you let Volvo sort it out. |

How would I know if I had the Haldex Gen 2. Is there an easy way to check this. What would I look for when inspecting the car. The car that I have been offered is on an 02 plate.

Crawled under the rear of the car today to measure my rear anti roll bar diameter, and noticed, just forwards of the rear axle, where the central prop shaft meets something, that this something had some oil on the bottom of it. What is this something? Are there any schematics that show the AWD system. Is this the dreaded angle gearbox, or the transfer gearbox. Any piccies of either of these so I can compare?

On non-Haldex, the part between the prop and the rear diff is the viscous coupling. The angle gear is at the front of the prop hidden up above the subframe.

Is this something that contains oil (like a gearbox). If not, then why would there be any oil in this area

Do a google image search for "Volvo Haldex".
There's a few pictures of in situ Haldex units, so if that's what your's looks like then it's a Haldex you have, if not it's a viscous Googling "Volvo viscous" didn't bring up any pictures of the viscous coupling in situ but a few diagrams so you should get a good idea what you're looking at. If the oil leak isn't significant, as in dripping, then I wouldn't worry too much.... The angle gear is at the other end of the prop shaft, it's the bit at the back of the gearbox where the prop fits.
