Default Vvt solenoid (exhaust side)

The engine management light has been on since I bought the car a month ago, and in fact I understand its been lit for years.

Just had the cambelt/water pump + thermostat changed, and my mechanic is saying the EML is lit because it needs a sensor under the shorter engine cover on the driver's hand side. I've googled and I understand its the VVT solenoid (exhaust side).

What would be the symptoms of a failed solenoid? Feels like it jerking a bit when I pull away, which it wasn't doing before he changed the cambelt!

Is it something I can change myself? He mentioned it might need coding to the car.

First thing I would do is get the codes read, without doing so is just guesswork.
If it's not running right after the cambelt change I would suspect the timing is out, only needs the belt to be one or two teeth out...
Maybe take it back and get the timing marks checked or diy.

If the EML has been lit for years, how has it passed the MoT? EML is an MoT fail.
As above, read the codes, guessing is expensive and time-consuming.

Thanks both

I've ordered a solenoid from a breakers and will see if that fixes it. My mechanic says he has read the codes and that is what it needs, and why it is running rough.

The lit EML was an advisory on each MOT for the last 6 years. I understand it's only an MOT failure for post-2003 cars.

Some codes don't return instantly. so if you reset the codes right before the MOT test and keep your fingers crossed ...

Once I had an airbag warning come on when I was on the way to the test (tin top P1 C70 with slightly corroded wiring connectors on the doors). The tester failed it for the warning light being on, then offered to clear it (for a small fee!) and issue a pass. I took him up on his generous offer to save the effort of having to book a retest. Of course the light came straight back on driving back from the test!

I wouldn't be surprised if resetting warning lamps is a nice little earner for MOT garages.
