Unhappy '87 740 GLE - dies when placed in gear

Hi, I've been looking at electrical problems online--seems like a lot of issues with the electrical end of the key/ignition. My 740 GLE wagon dies now every time I put it in gear, but cranks and runs fine in park and neutral--till it's put in gear. It doesn't sputter, rumble, cough--just goes dead. Is this from bad electrical contacts in the ignition switch, or maybe the neutral/park start defeat switch is defective.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks, dewjam

I don't KNOW the answer to this but pretty well every other gear box problem on volvos (OK, I exaggerate) seems to be to do with dry joints on the connections to the electrical gadgetry attached to the gearbox.

You can just re-solder all those connections on the switch you identify (that sounds like the culprit) and see if that fixes it. After that it's out with the manual and the wiring diagram.

Hi,

Manual or Auto?
If an auto then run the stick from park through all the gears and back.
Do that about 30 times.
Do it when the engine is off and then try with the engine on.

Des. . .
