Remote Central Locking Not Working 960
Hi all,
The remote locking isn't working on my 1996 960. (Never has since I bought it actually!). I assume that a previous owner may have disconnected it because of a fault, but I would like to getting it going again. What do I need to check out first - is there a fuse hidden somewhere, is the control box behind the glove box on these as it is in the 940? Anything else obvious? I do have the correct fobs, which are working and I have tried re-programming them. Grateful for thoughts as always.

Hi Graeme.
Chances are it's been disabled as they play up with age. The unit itself is a big double relay with a milti-plug in the top of it, located behind the lower dash to transmission tunnel cover on the passenger side. (This is presuming you have VG1 - large light grey fob and the triangular sensor jobbie on the A pillar.) If it's been disabled, you'll see the unit is missing and there will prob be a jumper cable across a couple of the pins to bypass the immobilizer as when they play up the car won't start. If the unit is there, then the memory is probably full. If memory serves they only hold 3 or 4 fobs and once full they have to be wiped clean by Volvo. Probably an impossibility these days. Good luck my freind! Steve

Volvo plippers
I have four Volvos with plippers that don't work - three are Volvo ones and the fourth is something aftermarket but no longer on the market (might be Skorpion). If anyone knows a REAL expert on such things in Kent I would be quite happy for a reasonable sized bill (or even a slightly large one) to cure the problems.
No it's not batteries in the fobs.

I'm not sure if the 960 might have a slightly more advanced system with the different engine management, but a 96 940 would have Volvo Guard 2. Behind the glove box, red led on the speaker (no A pillar module). I have a spare VG2 alarm unit with key fob which I could part with.

I got my vg1 alarm and remote locking working very well thanks to this useful thread.
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...=200312&page=1 If you're not confident doing the work yourself, a print-out of this thread would probably help a competent auto electrician to refurbish yours. If anyone has vg1 (single button grey) remotes that don't light up despite new batteries they are quite easy to repair. There is a component on the internal PCB that come loose. I've had no luck with vg2 and got no replies when I tried to start a similar thread on vg2 last summer. |

I too had assumed the same on another car after fitting it with an aftermarket system and tracing certain wires I eventually hit on the alarm. Once you turn them off they don't appear to be there.

Repaired my key fob remote control
I just repaired my key fob for my 1995 960 by heating the pins on one side of the microcontroller that had become detached from the circuit board pads by a tiny gap. Saw it under a microscope.
Not surprising as that chip is on the opposite side of the board from the open/close button. Lasted 28 years so can't complain. Need to do this under a magnifying glass with a very fine tipped soldering iron. Don't add solder, just heat each pin to melt the solder that's there already. I have a photo of the pins that were the problem. |
