85 DL 240 heater hose replacement

After 350K miles I have a gusher in the heater hose going into engine under intake. It's a trifle hard to get to and my question is should I just take the intake off so I can see it? If not just what is the technique to replacing the heater hose up under there? The other end of the hose at the firewall will be a breeze.

FWIW, I broke down and asked the guys at Professional Swedish repair and they told me you can do it with a 7mm 1/4 drive long extension between the 2&3 intake.
