RE: 960 turbo
IIRC the 960 turbo (only first year) used the B230 2.3Litre engine. You will need to remove the turbo from the car and see why the wastegate is stuck open. It may just be rusty and need freeing up. It should have a link to the pressure motor (can thing near front of turbo joined to wastegate arm with an adjustable link. Perhaps the arm has dropped off or become detatched, allowing the wastegate to stick in the open position. If it is too badly stuck then a replacement rear half of the turbo would get you out of shtook or a working unit from a scrappy.
All the best, Peter. |

RE: 960 turbo
Hi
The 'can thing' is called an actuator and can sometimes fail when the diaphragm inside becomes worn and splits - the wastegate then stays in the open position as there is nothing to pull it shut. If you take the clip holding the actuator arm on to the wastegate off (may well have to get the turbo off to do this comfortably), see if the wastegate opens and closes easily - if it's not seized open, try to move the actuator arm in and out, should move with some force against it. You could try a second hand one actuator if it's stuck or moves too freely - but a second hand turbo will only cost you £100 or less so is easier to buy a complete unit. Make sure there's no up and down play in the turbine shaft if buying second hand, and that the blades rotate freely. You might get someone to give you a few weeks guarantee on a used one - I know a few breakers who will do that up this way. Good luck - should be a fairly easy fix, have just taken the turbo off my 940 for a rebuild this week. JG
