Default 1.6 petrol steering rack

Hi
C30 1.6 petrol 2007

After changing inner tie rods and track rod ends have noticed play in the steering rack.
If the car is off the ground no noticeable issue.
When the car is on the ground and you turn the wheel whilst stationary you hear a ‘knock’.
After looking at the rack end (drivers side) you can see a small amount of movement.
Presume there is no adjustment on these.
They look really expensive to buy, plus look like a pain to change..
Is it an easy ish job on stands??
It feels like this might be the end for the car..!
Cheers

Changing a steering rack is generally a straightforward nut and bolt job however you'll probably have to lower the subframe a little to get the clearance to remove/install it.Try looking on you tube for a video on this as someone is bound to have done one. I've changed a gearbox on bot a C70 and Vauxhall Astra using axle stands so a steering rack should be doable also. Your options then are new refurbished or from a breaker[there is a very good breakers in Nottingham who do Saab and Volvos and they'll post parts out if necessary] it would seem a shame to bin a car for want of a steering rack but obviously that's your decision to make.
