Default 850 Glove box will not open.

Hi everybody we now have a 97 850CD in the family. Nice car and have had Volvo do a major on it and all is well. Well it cost a fair bit for them to do some odds and sods but its only money and it's a real beauty.

One odd problem that we would welcome some help on, is that for no apparent reason the glove box has suddenly refused to open. It's unlocked as far as the key goes and the spring tension can be felt on the release catch, but cannot tell if its let go at the inside end. Is there any trick to get these open or can they be released in any other way?

We will put into Volvo if we cannot sort, but just thought that another member may have had a similar problem.

Regards to all

Iain, many thanks. The small hole method looks reasonably straight forward and will give it a try.

I would love to read these, since I have exactly this problem. However, each URL returns a message saying they have moved - but the links offered do not seem to locate the articles. Do you know where they are now? Thanks for the avice posted so far.

Same thing happened to mine. The culprit is the plastic locking mechanism inside. I used a hacksaw to saw through the metal retainer, then once opened, removed the inner capping, replaced the mechanism and fitted a new retainer. Both were available through Volvo.

try searching the site using the search facility, there are various links to mathews volvo site, where the post about drilling the hole in the front "door" came from...
personally i would use the hacksaw method which is also listed there....
cheers

I agree totally jod T5.

The hacksaw method doesn't cause any damage to the glovebox box whereas the hole method .........

I nicked this picture from a Swedish 850/V70 forum. I haven't tried it but it looks like it might work without any risk of damaging anything.
